Petites plot

This documentary tells the story of the Dutroux case, told by a generation of children now adults and exposed to horrific events far too early. Their memories have changed over time, reshaped by the media and their childhood gaze. Little by little, these different testimonies tell the personal experience of this story that is part of the collective memory.

I was 13-14 years old in 1996. The Dutroux affair hit like a bomb and is etched in everyone's memory. It was a collective trauma for the whole country. One of the few things that really connected all the inhabitants of the country across language borders. Too bad it has to be so horrific to demonstrate this.

Dutroux's basement is one thing, the failing justice system and cumbersome structures another. The latter resulted in the great White March through Brussels with more than 300,000 demonstrators. The images reviewed in this documentary are well known to many Belgians from that generation and the generations before.

I'm not sure what the added value of this documentary is. I actually thought it was hardly appropriate for interviewees to unabashedly personify themselves with the victims or the events. This is not an "I was there" moment. Lucky that there were no smartphones back then ...
