Overstag plot

The butter mountain and the milk lake are concepts that will forever be associated with Sicco Mansholt, in 1945 the youngest Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the first Dutch Commissioner for the Euro. Mansholt introduced economies of scale and agricultural subsidies and minimum prices for farmers. With the best of intentions, but ultimately negative consequences: food surpluses and fruit and vegetables that were lost. Family, former politicians (including Hans van Mierlo, Max Kohnstamm and Bert Pot), farmers and friends portray a passionate social democrat, an honest and empathetic person and a politician with vision.
