Mysterion plot
"Mysterion" is the first part of a triptych about the search for the meaning of spirituality in a changing world. About 160 nuns live in the ancient monastery of Pyhtitsa in northeastern Estonia, who dedicate their lives to the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery is located in one of the most polluted areas in Estonia. Yet the purest imaginable water flows from the sacred spring at the foot of the monastery mountain. The nuns are mainly of Russian origin and raised during the Stalinist era. While the film gives a picture of the ecclesiastical year on the basis of the course of the seasons, it also addresses the question of what motivates girls raised by communists to join a monastic order.
