My Name Is Salt plot
Year after year, numerous families migrate to an arid desert in India. They work for eight months, until the monsoon sets in, to extract 'the whitest salt in the world'. This documentary shows the intensive labor of this family of salt miners. Atmospheric images set the tone: an empty landscape, a jet plane flying high over, a bird on a tree trunk, insects fluttering around lamplight and salt walls in the morning sun. Daily actions are filmed attentively but distantly: raking and sliding across the salt flat, tamping the earth, hammering tools, kneading bread dough, shaving, washing and resting. At the end of the season, the salt is carefully collected and loaded for sale. And then the rain comes and the desert turns into a sea again.
