Mural Hoofdstad plot

Heerlen long struggled with an inferiority complex. The mine closures in the 1970s, followed by a drug crisis, severely damaged the self-image of the city and its residents. But what will Heerlen be like in 2025? By providing ample space for international street artists, the city is working to build a new image as Street Art Capital. Yet, the question remains: what place is there left for homegrown artists?
