Metamorfose plot

In Metamorphosis, filmmaker and media artist Pim Zwier depicts the life and work of the German-Dutch artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), who laid the foundation for entomology – insect science. Her most important work revolved around the metamorphosis of caterpillars into butterflies: she recorded the process in beautiful prints and engravings and was the first to draw the insects together with the plant on which they live.

Born in Frankfurt, Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) devoted most of her life to collecting and studying caterpillars and butterflies. Her most famous book, Metamorphosis (1705), contained her research into caterpillars and butterflies in Suriname and is illustrated with beautiful, photorealistic illustrations. If you fancy watching the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly from the comfort of your armchair for 15 minutes, then this might be for you. Expect lots of caterpillars crawling over leaves or eating a bite there. Zwier tries to liven things up a bit with paintings or illustrations in which actors walk through and a few actors who also get to say something in stately Dutch. The type of “film” that belongs in the small cinemas in a (nature) museum, not in the cinema. The illustrations are beautiful, but for that you’d better turn to the book.
