Mene Tekel plot
In the year 2000, half of all young people in Amsterdam will be of immigrant origin. The government wants to promote integration and the 'fusion of cultures' by, for example, making it compulsory that seventy percent of newly hired people in the Amsterdam municipality must be immigrants or women. Mene Tekel shows, without interviews, but observing and structured like a feature film, the consequences of this policy for the Amsterdam fire brigade. Sons from old firefighting families are no longer automatically eligible for a position. Immigrant newcomers, on the other hand, are almost forced to end up in the fire service due to the good intentions of the emergency services. There they are then extensively tested and initiated: after all, as soon as the alarm goes off, a possible confrontation with death threatens, and people must be able to trust each other blindly.
