Memory of the Camps plot
"A lost masterpiece of British documentary cinema from 1945"
'Memory of the Camps' was a commissioned film with the aim of introducing the German people to the atrocities of the Nazis, and thus forcing the country to take responsibility for those actions. As a director, Hitchcock was asked to puzzle together the footage shot by the British Army, including the liberation of Bergen-Belsen in 1945. The film features footage from Dachau, Buchenwald, Bergen-Belsen, and other lesser-known concentration camps. Some footage was literally shot just before the Allies reached the camps, as the Nazis tried to destroy evidence of what they had done.
