Mechanical Principles plot

Up close, we see pistons moving up and down or back and forth. Pendulums swing, the small parts of machines move. Gears drive larger wheels. Gears within gears turn. Axles turn a mechanism that is out of sight. Screws turn and move other gears. More subtle mechanisms move other mechanical parts for unknown purposes. Weights rise and fall. The movements, underscored by sound, are rhythmic. Circles, squares, rods and teeth move continuously and sometimes asymmetrically. These man-made mechanical parts seem benign and reassuring.
