The world famous Danish painter and sculptor Per Kirkeby (1938) falls down the stairs after a brain haemorrhage and can no longer paint according to his own high standard due to severe brain damage. Kirkeby once worked with the Fluxus artists Joseph Beuys and Nam June Paik, created the panoramic landscape sequences for Lars von Trier's Breaking the Waves and became known for his monumental brick sculptures. After his unfortunate fall he can no longer see colors and sometimes he no longer recognizes his own paintings and even his wife. His good friend and film-maker Anne Regitze Wivel follows him closely during his difficult rehabilitation. She portrays everything – from the daily inconveniences to the emotionally charged, candid conversations – in a sober way. Kirkeby wants nothing more than to get his old life back, but his physical and mental strength is limited. He describes his new, almost blind life as a frightening shadow world...
