Mahler plot
A portrait of Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) based on rehearsals for his ninth, penultimate symphony (1908-09) by the Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Ricardo Chailly. Director Scheffer first concentrates on the lively face and agile body of the conducting Chailly, who bids farewell to the orchestra with this production. Later on, the orchestra members also appear on the screen, making music in a concentrated way. The music fragments of the Ninth Symphony (and a few other Mahler fragments) are interspersed with talking heads interviews with Chailly, who refers to Mengelberg's Mahler performances, and the passionate Mahler biographer Henry-Louis de la Grange.
