"Did scientists inadvertently caused the AIDS epidemic?"

The origin of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is still unclear. It must have arisen through contact between humans and the genetically closely related chimpanzees, who were infected with the HIV-related siv virus. The nature of that contact is uncertain. In discussions with experts, the hypothesis is being developed that the virus was created by human hands in Africa in the late 1950s, through the development of a vaccine against polio.
