La Permanence plot
It is a walk-in consultation hour at Hôpital Avicenne, a hospital in Bobigny, a suburb of Paris. The only place in the area where newly arrived immigrants, often illegally or still waiting for papers, can go. The doctor, assisted by a psychiatrist, listens soberly but understandingly. His patients not only struggle with headaches or insomnia, but also struggle with bureaucracy, forms, long waiting times, the search for a place to sleep; all that on top of the trauma of fleeing and separating from their family.
