La Montagne Magique plot
A camera takes us deep underground, where Bolivian miners toil in primitive conditions. A film like a time machine, which takes us back in the pitch darkness to a prehistoric altar and at the same time confronts us with the voyeurism of the tourist industry. The title refers to the Cerro Rico near the Bolivian city of Potosi, a mountain that has been eroded by centuries of mining to the point of collapse. There is much worth knowing about this, but Schtakleff does something completely different. Without comment, he shows the viewer that subterranean business. By the dim light of a lantern he wanders through the rough-hewn tunnels. Here and there we meet a miner during his laborious work. A group of tourists forms a bizarre contrast.
