La Convocazione plot

In Italy, citizens can be called up to serve as jurors in certain criminal cases. You are not given much time to think about it: a day in advance you are randomly selected by a computer system and immediately called up for a selection interview at the court. And so one day at 10 o'clock in the morning sixty tense citizens take their seats in the courtroom of the court of assizes. Their chatter, whispers, frightened questions, cheerful remarks and discomfort are captured and welded together into a soft cacophony full of reflection on this special civic duty. A long-running, illustrious 1974 lawsuit and the judge's injunction that no one should fear the mafia add an extra dimension to this cinematic observation.
