Klokken van de Keizer plot
In the eighteenth century mechanical playing clocks, the so-called SingSongs, were made for the Chinese emperor. In the form of people, animals and pagodas, preferably made of gold and inlaid with precious stones. There are still 1500 in the Forbidden City in Beijing. Eight of them have been restored in the Museum Speelklok. The documentary about the restoration process exposes the cultural differences between China and the Netherlands in various ways. The curators of the Chinese Palace Museum are shocked by the restoration views of the Dutch and the Dutch hear that the Chinese do not believe in mutual trust, only in contracts. The Chinese are not aware of the usefulness of a documentary about the restoration, which leads to a tense situation, in which a possible unique exhibition of the Chinese playing clocks in Utrecht is endangered.
