1918. When the roar of the guns of the First World War died down, a golden age in central Europe, in Vienna, was on its last legs. The Austro-Hungarian Empire began to fall apart. On the night of October 31, Egon Schiele died, at home in his own bed, as one of the twenty million victims of the Spanish flu. He died looking the invisible disease in the eye, in the only way he knew how: by painting it. He was 28 years old.
