Kill Your Darling plot
In 1990 the lifeless body of a woman was found in the Westersingel in Rotterdam, stripped of head and hands. She remained anonymous for a long time, but thanks to DNA research the body could be identified in 2008: the victim was the American model Melissa Halstead. Joint research by the Rotterdam 'cold case team' and colleagues in England led to John Sweeney, who had a tumultuous relationship with Halstead (see the many gruesome drawings he made) and lived with her in Amsterdam at the time. He has been incarcerated since 2001 for the attempted murder of another loved one. Director Jaap van Hoewijk followed the detectives (both in the Netherlands and Great Britain) in their attempts to reconstruct the past, visited relatives and acquaintances of both Halstead and Sweeney and (although filming is not allowed) is present at the trial where Sweeney eventually sentenced to life imprisonment. But Sweeney himself also speaks, in a narrated voice-over based on a page-long letter he sent to the director. When Sweeney calls him from prison not much later, the director takes his chance to question Sweeney himself.
