Jaffa, the Orange's Clockwork plot
Orange cultivation does not seem the most obvious starting point for a look at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Until 'Jaffa, The Orange's Clockwork' recalls that the disputed border region between the two states was one of the world's largest exporters of orange gold in the last century. Director Eyal Sivan reconstructs how Jaffa changed from a Palestinian place name to an Israeli brand, and how the orange cultivation transformed from collaborative labor into a toy claimed by both sides in their escalating conflict. He uses a torrent of archival material for this, from the earliest photography from 1840 to razor-sharp video shots from recent years. The images are commented on by various experts as they watch them: projected onto the walls of their offices or the sheets of their living rooms.
