Inner Landscape plot

Documentary about the creation of the chamber opera Si Fan, which was composed for the Nieuw Ensemble in 2015 by the Chinese composer Guo Wenjing. In Si Fan ('love longing'), Guo combines the traditional opera of his native Sichuan region with his own music. “I don't think when I compose, but I follow my heart,” Guo tells Ed Spanjaard, the chief conductor of the Nieuw Ensemble, who comes to visit him in China to be initiated into the secrets of Sichuan opera. Shen Tiemei, star singer of the Sichuan opera, also speaks in this film about the differences between East and West, tradition and modern times. Inner Landscape is the second part of a four-part series, of which the first part Gozaran – Time Passing, about the Iranian composer Nader Mashayekhi, premiered at IDFA in 2011. In 2015, director/producer Frank Scheffer already made a 'work in progress' under the same name.
