In de Greep van de Tango plot
'In the Grip of the Tango' is a documentary with and about tango and about people who dedicate their lives to it. "One likes classical music, the other likes flamenco or punk," says Carel Kraayenhof, bandoneon player and protagonist of the film. Kraayenhof lives in Amsterdam and is the driving force behind Sexteto Canyengue, a Dutch tango sextet. In 1984 an Argentine passer-by offered him a bandoneon. The instrument has fascinated him from that very first moment. "A bandoneon is just like a person", says Carel Kraayenhof, "it cries and it laughs." The tango is an attitude to life. Sexteto Canyengue's tango repertoire is in the style of Osvaldo Pugliese, the legendary Argentine composer. Pugliese, who in turn is an admirer of Carel Kraayenhof, invites the Dutch bandoneon player to come to Buenos Aires. Kraayenhof meets people there who not only become his friends but also share his passion for the tango.
