Hoe Te Verdwijnen plot
Together with a number of fellow sufferers, filmmaker Marc Schmidt investigates the feeling of emptiness and the ways to fill it. He undertakes this personal quest for excesses and insatiability in an attempt to understand his deceased father. A young mother tries to fill the emptiness with her daily eating binges, a sex addict is looking for the man who can heal her. The ultimate confrontation with emptiness is entered into by a sailor who crosses the Atlantic Ocean alone. The portraits move along current themes – deepfake, eating disorders, addiction, identity and intergenerational trauma – and thus provide a hyper-personal representation of a widely shared feeling in Western societies. In between the portraits it slowly becomes clear that Marc, like his father, also knows the emptiness that lies behind excesses.
