What's left? Life leaves traces; so does the passage of time. This documentary examines how one relates to the other. Using documents from his personal archive - letters, photos, school essays, diary entries - read by director Heise himself in voice-over and shown on screen, he traces the story of four generations of his family in Vienna, Dresden and (Eastern ) Berlin. We see black-and-white images of the places and landscapes mentioned in the correspondence as they look today, which bear the traces of time: the labor camp in Zerbst, the former barracks of the National People's Army, a university auditorium and terraced houses in Mainz.
