Heilige Rosa plot
Saint Rose is the patron saint of Sittard. But when her procession moves through the city - a three-century-old tradition - the public sits on the terrace with a beer. Like it's just a parade. Director Hans Heijnen portrayed the predominantly older, often melancholy and sometimes bitter members of the Sittard Catholic community. They talk about their personal involvement and about secularization. Like Jacques Pfennings, master of ceremonies for adult altar boys for forty years, who honestly admits that he no longer goes to confession himself. Or the young chaplain Ivo Krewinkel, who watches parents deliver their children as if the church were just 'one of the clubs'. Heijnen not only films the members of the church (a nun, an old pastor and ex-missionary, a dean) and their work (a meeting, a conversation with a possible entrant to the monastery, a visit to the sick). But also the rituals: a first communion, an Easter celebration, a procession and a funeral.
