Grumant: Island of Communism plot

“An island of communism.” That's what tourists call Barentsburg, the place on Spitsbergen that is inhabited by Russian seasonal workers. The film-maker follows a group of miners from their homeland, where they emotionally say goodbye to loved ones, to bleak Barentsburg, where Lenin stands on his pedestal in the freezing cold, and where paper and coins do not exist; all purchases are deducted from salary. “There is nothing good here,” one of the miners says. He's not the only one who thinks so. Yet most Russians have been returning since the 1990s to perform the life-threatening work in the mines in a place where the sun does not shine above the ground. The workers do find warmth in the former ski rental hut that serves as a church. Their funny traditions and rehearsals for the New Year's Eve party in the recreation center also provide a welcome distraction.
