Gringo Trails plot

In this documentary, anthropologist and filmmaker Pegi Vail examines the rise in tourism in developing countries. Once upon a time, the following locations were not particularly interesting for tourists: the deserts around the Malian Timbuktu, the Thai island of Koh Pha Ngan, the Bolivian jungle and the majestic mountains of Bhutan. A difficult-to-manage tourism industry is now flourishing in those places, with all the (bad) consequences that entails.
