Gesneuveld plot
The corporate social work department of the Ministry of Defense has grown enormously since the mission in Uruzgan, in which twenty-five Dutch soldiers were killed. Eighty social workers are working across the country to assist relatives of fallen soldiers. Before departure, every soldier who is deployed has given two addresses of relations who must be warned first. Defense tries to reach the family within an hour and a half. In Gesneuveld, filmmaker Robert Oey shows how Defense employees bring the bad news to relatives that their son or daughter has died. He asks what it is like to be helped by the same organization that was responsible for the well-being – and therefore also the death – of their loved one.
