Karl Eriksson was a banjo-playing hippie with a penchant for bluegrass in the late 1960s who only made his international breakthrough as a musician in 2012 with the soundtrack for the award-winning Belgian film The Broken Circle Breakdown. Father Bert was a member of the far-right Flemish Social Movement in the early 1950s and was the leader of the Flemish Militants Order, which he co-founded, from 1971 onwards. How is it possible that the contrast between father and son was so great? And what was their relationship like? Van Schaeren's own family history has many similarities with that of Eriksson and this documentary is the result of a three-day series of interviews in which Eriksson tells his life story. Fortunately it is special, because Van Schaeren's unimaginative direction and mechanical commentary are nothing to write home about.
