Electrocuting an Elephant plot
Topsy, the famous female baby elephant, was electrocuted on January 4, 1903, on Coney Island. Topsy originally belonged to the Forepaugh Circus, where she killed a drunken spectator who burned the tip of her trunk with a cigar. She was resold in 1902 and ended up at Luna Park. After deciding they could no longer handle her, Luna Park's owners announced they would hang Topsy, sparking an outcry from animal welfare organization ASPCA. The owners then decided that they would electrocute the elephant. After copper electrodes were attached to her feet, 6,600 volts was applied.
