El Sistema plot
"Music to Change Lfie"
El Sistema is a network of youth and youth orchestras, music centers and rehearsal spaces in Venezuela. Thanks to this organization, more than 250,000 children are currently learning to play an instrument. El Sistema was founded more than 30 years ago by José Antonio Abreu, conductor, composer and economist. He came up with the idea to combine classical music with social work, to offer disadvantaged children an alternative to their life on the street. For example, Abreu tries to free children from poverty in the dangerous slums of Caracas. He wants to change not only the lives of individuals but also the larger structures. A number of graduates now belong to the European top of young talent. In the film, three young students are followed during their daily lives for a year. They have little in common until they become part of the 'system'. They learn to play their instrument and are confronted with the persistence and loving patience of their teachers. The question is what the system achieves by bringing young people into contact with classical music. How much can this change their lives?
