Documented plot
Jose Antonio Vargas is not only a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist in America, but also what they call an 'undocumented', i.e. illegal immigrant. At the age of twelve he was sent to America by his mother in the hope of a better future. Vargas starts the Define American project and joins the Dreamers, who fight for the legalization of the approximately 11 million US residents who, like Vargas, crossed the border at a young age and built up a whole life. Images of the journalist's lectures and other publicity activities for the Dreamers are interspersed with memories of his childhood and the grandparents he grew up with, musings on what it means to be American, and shots of his family in the Philippines .
