This documentary follows the inhabitants of Africatown, a small community in Alabama. They share their personal stories and community histories as descendants of the Clotilda, the last known slave ship that illegally transported people as cargo from Africa to the Americas. The ship's existence, an ancient open secret, is confirmed by a team of maritime archaeologists.

Although the international slave trade was abolished in 1807, the transport of slaves to the U.S. continued for decades. The last slave ship was the Clotilda, which arrived in Mobile Bay, Alabama, in 1859 with 100 men, women, and children on board. The ship was sunk and has not been found to this day. After the abolition of slavery, the slaves from that time settled in nearby Africatown. Direct descendants of these people play a key role in a new effort to locate and salvage the Clotilda. In doing so, the history of their ancestors is given a prominent and dignified place in local and national history. It reveals much about the persistent racial tensions in the Confederacy and the value of safeguarding African American history.
