Der Dritte Bruder plot
During her search for her father's mother, the director comes across the story of three brothers who are tossed back and forth between the fronts of political ideologies in the Third Reich and divided Germany. Hermann makes a career as an international lawyer for the Nazis and after the war defends a war criminal in Nuremberg. His brothers have Jewish wives. Walther flees to America in time, Otto, "the third brother" and the grandfather of the filmmaker, believes in the rule of law as a lawyer and wants to stay in Dresden. His wife Ruth is accused and murdered in Auschwitz. He tells his sons that she died in a sanatorium and from that moment on she disappears into a mist of powerless repression. In the GDR, Otto himself becomes a prosecutor for the Stasi. Was he a victim or do you always have a choice?
