Copa 71 plot

"The greatest sporting story you've never heard of."

In the summer of 1971, the best women's football teams in the world competed against each other in Mexico. The Copa 71 is still the most attended women's sporting event ever: why is it never mentioned? Half a century later, the women who played then are still shocked by it. Ordinary girls from mostly simple backgrounds who were welcomed as heroes in Mexico. The film tells the incredible story of the tournament that had to disappear from the annals of sports.

A year after Mexico hosted the men's World Cup, a number of Mexican businessmen decided to join forces for a women's World Cup. More than 112,000 people attended the final of the Copa 71, making this event still the most attended sporting event for women. But even Brandi Chastain, the captain of the American team that won the first official women's world title in 1991, appears to know nothing about this. Erskine and Ramsay managed to obtain the television images, which had been forgotten for decades, and spoke to members of all six participating teams. Starts with a prologue that makes it clear that conservative, powerful men also managed to suppress women's football 50 years earlier. Fascinating documentary, in which Erskine and Ramsay choose to give the participating women the recognition they deserve. It's a shame they don't go into more detail about the sexist motives behind organizing the tournament.
