Closed District plot
In 1996 director Vandeweerd stayed in the village of Mankien in South Sudan to film the war. At the time, he thought making a film about a conflict-ridden region was an act of dedication. Once there, reality appeared differently than he had imagined. The war that was being fought was not only a struggle between an oppressive government and oppressed minorities, but above all a latent conflict dominated by economic interests and power. “Closed District” is not just a film about the war in South Sudan; the documentary is also about war in general, about the death and suffering that often result from it.
