Singer Chavela Vargas became known first in Mexico and later worldwide, mainly for her interpretation of traditional 'rancheras'. These songs were mainly written by men and usually they told about an unfulfilled love for a woman, life weariness and loneliness. Chavela played with her own unique sense of rhythm and sang with her signature rough, vulnerable voice. Her masculine look and red poncho made her unmistakable.
