Cane Fire plot
Editor and filmmaker Anthony Banua-Simon, goes in search of the lost Lois Weber film Cane Fire, shot on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i. The 1934 film may contain the only moving image of his great-grandfather Alberto, a Filipino plantation worker who starred on set. Banua-Simon soon realizes that there is a much more important connection between the plantation and the film industry. This documentary reveals how cinema paved the way for the US government and the five families who controlled the Hawaiian plantations to increase their stranglehold on the archipelago.
