Bright Leaves plot
McElwee heads south for a movie that begins as an investigation into his genealogy. Visiting a cousin, a passionate film collector, he sees the film Bright Leaves, a classic 1950s melodrama starring Michael Curtiz's Gary Cooper, about a great tobacco industrialist who was shattered by his competition in a low way. The McElwees believe that the fallen tobacco giant in the film is their great-grandfather. The filmmaker then sets out to prove the family legend.
