Blue Meridian plot

Traveling from Cairo, Illinois, to Venice, Louisiana, the journey introduces the viewer to the people who live along the river, among the traces of natural disasters, economic decline and a turbulent history. Like a blue meridian, the Mississippi draws a line between east and west, north and south. The river is an icon of the American nation and a symbol of the American dream. Along the river, the complex relationship between place and identity in America becomes clear: floods, race riots and real estate speculation have driven many people away, leaving towns and cities half deserted. Those who have stayed are trying to preserve the past or build something new in the tradition of the American promise. The documentary offers us a critical, yet empathetic look at this scarred America.
