That William Broad is still enjoying life at 70 as a husband, father, grandfather, and rock icon is truly a miracle. By his own account, against his better judgment, he threw himself into the punk scene in the 70s and rose to become a rock star through his alter ego Billy Idol, first as the lead singer of Generation X, and later as a solo artist. This is the archetypal life story of the archetypal 80s rock star who lost himself in his alter ego, told with the wisdom of the years and a healthy dose of self-mockery. Most of the surviving key figures lend extra credibility to this narrative, and Åkerlund makes clever use of animation to depict key moments in a sometimes suitably surreal manner.

A documentary about an artist whose hits I know, but barely anything about his life. That makes it quite interesting for me as a music lover. The two-hour running time was initially daunting. How much can you tell about this man! But we get a fascinating portrayal of his life, very open and sometimes even animated. Billy Idol speaks a lot himself, yet we still learn a great deal about his addictions to drugs and alcohol, or his illegitimate children. A punk icon who stood in contrast to the working-class punks of the late 70s. But he did survive the 70s and, via MTV, was an inspiration to many rock bands that came after him.
