Banking the Unbanked plot
How does a microfinance bank in a third world country operate? Microfinance seems to be the answer to poverty. Give poor people back their own responsibility, was the adage. The new economic infrastructure would fight poverty - perhaps fundamentally. Is microfinance the panacea it's passed off as according to the mostly successful reports? The documentary 'Banking the Unbanked' shows the practice. Two ambitious Gambians and their young microfinance institution 'Reliance' are followed for six months. In addition to making money, these bankers have a wish: to help their country move forward. But banking for the poor turns out to be a tough job.
