Bancal plot
Santiago is a master of stacking stones. If you choose the right bricks and work and place them just right, the structures are at least as sturdy as a masonry wall. The title refers to the dry stone walls that are common on farmland in southern European countries. The film provides no explanation or context, but simply immerses you in Santiago's actions: finding the stones, polishing and chiseling, placing and arranging. It is simple and earthy but at the same time grand and mysterious. As intensely as Santiago is absorbed in his actions, the filmmakers in turn consider his concentrated work so attentively.
