Bachtiar plot

In the period between the proclamation of independence and the events of the autumn of 1965 that led to the persecution and often the murder of leftists and other people accused of subversion, Bakhtiar Siagian was one of Indonesia's best filmmakers. Siagian, a leading member of Indonesia's most important cultural movement Lembaga Kebudayaan Rakyat, disappeared behind bars for twelve years and would never direct a film again. Neglect and Suharto's reign of terror erased most traces of Bakhtiar Siagian's life and work. Hafiz Rancajale wanted to know what was still to be found. “Bakhtiar” is a portrait of a pioneering filmmaker and a rejection of the slander heaped upon him in official historiography.
