Aji plot
“Dream Cuisine” begins with a shot of an old woman gazing at a bottle of coiled snakes in a murky liquid. Moments later it turns out that she is the 78-year-old cook Sato Hatsue. Hatsue is officially recognized as a master of traditional cuisine in Shandong, the Chinese province where she grew up. She and her husband, with whom she has been together for forty years, run a restaurant in their hometown of Tokyo and give cooking classes. The Satos are very attached to the old traditions of Shandong cuisine, where, for example, the use of sugar and lard is taboo. Hatsue's dream is to return to China and teach there, but her husband doesn't want to move in his old age.
