"René Gardi's Africa"
From the 1950s, Swiss filmmaker and writer René Gardi left his mark on how an entire generation saw Africa. Compiled from archival footage, this essay film reveals Gardi's colonialist mindset and reflects on today's projections. The intention is not so much to make a portrait of an adventurer as to carry out a work of cinematographic field research. It deals with the transcontinental history of media, their means of production and how in 20th century Switzerland both were significantly influenced by one flamboyant character.
