A Labyrinth of Time plot
Elliott Carter, who has lived in New York all his life, represents nearly a century of music history. He is regarded worldwide as one of the most important living composers in the European tradition. The creative period in his life spans more than 70 years. In December 2003, Elliott Carter turned 95. Despite his advanced age, this master of modern classical music is still very active in creating new compositions. In this documentary, experts such as Daniel Barenboim, Charles Rosen and Pierre Boulez give their views on Carter's work. The film shows Carter's musical development and places his compositions in time. The city of New York is used as a metaphor, because Carter himself describes his music as a reflection on democratic society. A democratic society in which people have to work together and at the same time try to preserve their individuality.
