Agadez in Niger has long been the starting point for human smugglers to bring migrants across the desert to Libya. Under pressure from Europe, the government of Niger is trying to combat smuggling, but there are few alternatives for the local economy. Those who stop human smuggling usually end up in gold mining. It is hard and dangerous work, and only a few get rich from it.
