While on holiday in Spain, songwriter Phil Graham runs into his former RAF comrade Tony Roscoe, whom he hasn't seen since the war. Tony is suddenly recalled to Britain on an urgent assignment, but is unable to drive back to London. Phil wants to help Tony by driving and returning his car as well as taking a valuable envelope that Tony has safely locked in a hotel safe. After saying goodbye to Tony, Phil is ambushed by criminals while driving Tony's car. Mysterious hotel guest Darius and local Police Inspector Goldfinch tell Phil that his old friend Tony has been involved in criminal activity since he left the RAF. Upon his return, Phil finds Tony murdered and everyone seems to have been chasing the mysterious microfilm envelope ever since.
