Ian McKellen is fun as the critic the title refers to, and the always elegant Gemma Arterton is just the right actress to counter him. Too bad that after an interesting start the plot gets a bit lost in a too easy game and pays too little attention to the character development that made the beginning seem so promising. And the beautiful sharp language also disappears too much.

Visually it all fits, although the key scene is a bit too poetic for my taste. Perhaps that is also the result of the restoration work that was apparently done between the first screening and the release a little over a year later.

A decent film about an elderly theater critic who fears for his job when his boss dies. The first half is entertaining and has a rather original plot. After that, the film sags a bit at times. It's reasonably stylishly shot here and there, and the cast is strong.
