Simon Hirsch, a middle-aged salesman, is on the trail of some men who murdered a cop, a friend of Simon's. The killers turn out to be a gambling addict and a younger man with mental problems. The events leading up to the murder appear to be intertwined with Hirsch's obsessive search for the killers.

A bit messy told and edited, but apart from that this debut by director Jacques Audiard is worth watching. Against a depressingly poor background a fascinating friendship unfolds between an elderly gambling addict (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and a younger man with mental problems (Mathieu Kassovitz). Beautifully played and atmospherically shot, although the film lacks the emotional punch of Audiard's later work.

A bit of a crazy film and especially in the beginning very messy so I never really got into it. But enough separate moments that still work and the pacing is also quite good so the film as a whole is good to watch even though not every scene was equally captivating. The film does have a really low budget look that on the one hand feels fresh but on the other hand is not very special to watch. 3.0*.
